Gladiator Russell Crowe

Gladiator Russell Crowe

The Gladiator Russell Crowe movie is a powerful story of bravery and survival. Maximus Decimus Meridias is a powerful Roman General, loved by the people and the aging Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Aware that he is dying, Marcus plans to name his loyal and brave General Maximus as his successor. He knows that General Maximus will restore the power of the Roman Senate. However, his power-hungry, jealous son Commodus learns of his father’s wishes. So he murders Marcus Aurelius, and plans to execute Maximus in order to secure his claim to the throne.

The Consequences of Commodus’s Jealousy

Commodus’s jealousy leaves General Maximus’s family condemned to death. Escaping an ordered execution, Maximus hurries back to his home in Spain. However, he is unable to save his family. Deeply distraught, he allows himself to be captured due to the consequent loss of his will. Taken into slavery and trained as a Gladiator by Proximo, Maximus’ only goal is that he might someday achieve revenge. He wants to rise to the top and look into the eyes of the man who will feel his revenge before killing him. Then he plans to continue on to fulfill the dying wish of his emperor.

Gladiator Games

Eventually, Maximus and his fellow gladiators are sent to Rome. They are to participate in a marathon of Gladiator games held at the behest of the new emperor, Commodus. Once in Rome, Maximus wastes no time in making his presence known. With his former-love Lucilla and the democratic-minded senator, Gracchus, he quickly becomes involved in a plot to overthrow the emperor. Lucilla is Commodus’ sister – after whom Maximus lusts – and is the widowed mother of Lucius who is heir to the empire after his uncle.

Winning Over the Masses

Through incredible bravery, Maximus wins over the masses and reveals his true identity, much to the chagrin of Commodus. Can General Maximus use his newfound popularity to avenge Marcus Aurelius’s death? Or will Commodus be able to keep the throne?
