A Model Daughter: The Killing of Caroline Byrne

A Model Daughter: The Killing of Caroline Byrne is based on the true story of beautiful young Australian model Caroline Byrne, who tragically met her death on the 7th June in 1995. She was found at the bottom of the high cliffs of “the Gap”; a notorious suicide spot in Sydney.

At the time, the police initially wrote the case off as suicide, but contradicting evidence soon began to arise, and suspicions were directed towards her very controlling boyfriend, Gordon Wood. As time went on, the deeper investigators looked into her case, the less likely it seemed that she could have landed like that from jumping voluntarily. Caroline’s father, naturally devastated over the loss of his lovely daughter, was determined not to give up before the truth about Caroline’s death had been revealed.

The case became one of the longest running in Australian history, and a trial convicting Wood for the murder of Byrne did not come to a close until November 2008, where he was sentenced to 17 years in prison.

Production

The movie about this unusual case went into production shortly after the sentence had been confirmed. It was commissioned by Network Ten. A Model Daughter stars Cariba Heine as Byrne, and Garry McDonald as Caroline’s father Tony Byrne. It also stars David Lyons as Byrne’s boyfriend Gordon Wood.

Wood was acquitted of Byrne’s murder in February 2012, after serving three and a half years in Goulburn jail. A unanimous decision was given by the Court of Appeal. They said that there was insufficient evidence to show beyond reasonable doubt that Wood murdered Byrne.
