Nancy Wake Gestapo’s Most Wanted

This is the incredible true story of Nancy Wake Gestapo’s Most Wanted, the daring allied female spy of WWII. Code-named ‘The White Mouse’ for her elusiveness, this international femme-fatale was a key inspiration behind Sebastian Faulkes’ celebrated fictional spy Charlotte Gray.

Not a Feminist

Although Nancy Wake might appear to be a Feminist, Feminism did not exit in those days. Really, it didn’t appear until Germane Greer published her book The Female Eunuch. Forthright women volunteered and were recruited, trained, sincerely welcomed and accepted as valuable soldiers. Afterwards they undertook remarkably dangerous assignments during WW2.

Intelligence Work

These talented women were of enormous value both on the fighting front and in Britain and were heavily involved in intelligence work, code breaking, plotting and analysis. Furthermore, they received equal recognition and sadly, quite a number were executed as spies. America came into the war late, after the attack on Pearl Harbour, and seemed not to value females as much as the British and Europeans. Nancy was not an isolated case, she was one of so very many!

The NZ / AU Connection

Born in New Zealand and grew up in Australia, Nancy felt somewhat torn emotionally between both countries. Post war, she really felt more French than antipodean. Much to the shame of successive Australian governments, Nancy was never properly or fairly recognised / acknowledged for her wartime gallantry and sheer heroism. She was a mighty woman. So were many other women who served with undaunted bravery in both the Pacific and European theatres.

Socialism

Adversity brings out the best in humans, Nancy proved that unquestionably. Here is a quote to ponder from an Australian poet (whom Nancy would have studied at school). It is, “A nation rots in a deadly peace”. The poet’s name was Henry Lawson who notably was a committed socialist. Think about it. Is the West rotting?

Worthy of Respect

You have to respect a women of that calibre. Someone who took many chances in her life to do what she did. The Germans of that time where extremely ruthless in their dealings with the population of any country that they invaded. What shaped her decision to do what she did was witnessing the German cruelty towards another human being. Even with the fact that she had to leave her husband behind to continue her work speaks volumes of the sacrifice that brave women and men preform in the face of tyranny. She did an honourable thing, a generous act of kindness and sacrifice.

Amazing Bravery

This brave, brutally honest, caring, compassionate, amazing, beautiful, talented, and a fierce woman is more than a hero. She needs to be a role model to the kids of today. They would learn to stand up for those who cannot do it themselves from her. To not back down from fear and stand for what you believe. What she had accomplished was nothing short of the work of a saint, and what she did definitely changed the way that WWII went.

Thank you for everything that you did for not only the French, the Jews, the British, but also America. Women, like Nancy Wake should be talked about, taught about, and honoured. She was way ahead of her time. Young girls across the globe should be looking towards her for inspiration, not Beyonce or Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama or any of these wannabe heroes. RIP Ms Wake. Thank you for your brave service, and for being a great role model to all women all over the world.
